6/19/03 - Report on City Council Meeting 6/16/03 - Agenda Item No. 6 - PACT asked the City Council for their support in opposing the casino by going on record with a formal letter to that intent. When PACT made this request to the City Council for their support, Council members Braley and Osbon were solid in their support of this request. Mayor Burns declined to sign the letter, desiring further time to study the question and he plans to address City Council of his findings at the July 7 City Council meeting. Further, the Mayor indicated he did not intend to put the issue on the Agenda on July 7, and unless he changes his mind, the City Council cannot make any decisions about sending a letter to the Governor at the July 7 meeting.
If you think the letter and resolution should be reviewed again by the City Council at the July 7 meeting, contact the members of the City Council and the City Manager, Rodger Bennett, who advises the City Council in these matters, and ask them to represent the will of the electorate by going on official record against the casino. Again, we have been informed that unless it is an Agenda Item, the council cannot take action on July 7. We believe that the fact that during the meeting two casino spokesmen vehemently urged the Council not to write the letter or adopt the resolution, shows the importance such an action would have on our efforts to keep a casino out of Florence. We realize that there are many viewers of our web page, and we do not want to suggest that PACT has all the answers to the challenging task of opposing the casino. We strongly urge you to pursue other alternatives based on your experiences and background in the community. If you have ideas to share, please write to us at info@pactoregon.org or at P.O.
