| 7/5/03 PRESS RELEASE NO CASINO" SIGNS VANDALIZED PACT reports that it erected their third NO CASINO sign on 35th and Hwy. 101. An individual who claimed to be a member of the Siuslaw Indian Tribe tore the sign down and hid it in vegetation near his house. PACT reported the incident to the Florence Police, who accompanied them to retrieve the sign from the individual, and the sign was put back up on July 4, 2003. The next day, July 5, PACT found a second “NO CASINO” sign south of Florence vandalized with graffiti by unknown persons. The incident was reported to the State Police. PACT will repair the damage to the sign. Spokesperson for the group, Susie Dewberry, said, “The first incident we viewed as a misguided response. The second incident was a crime, and we intend to prosecute the person or persons who were involved.” Said Dewberry, “We very much appreciate those persons who have offered these locations for our message. These misguided attempts at stifling our voice will not deter us from stopping a casino, because a casino would retard economic growth - as casinos have done in other towns in Oregon - and fundamentally change the very character of Florence.” PACT is offering a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individual involved in the vandalism. |
