Oregon teens at risk for gambling problems
According to the state Department of Human Services, one in ten teens is at risk for developing a gambling problem. And one in every 25 is a problem gambler. Oregon focus groups shed light on extent of youth gambling Associated Press - July 1, 2007 1:35 PM ET PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Some Oregon focus groups are shedding light on the extent of youth gambling and a public awareness campaign that the nonprofit Oregon Partnership has launched about the issue. The group has launched a pilot campaign encouraging parents to talk with their children about gambling risks. The campaign comes on the heels of recent youth and parent focus groups that found every participating teen had gambled at some point. The findings are significant given that Oregon has more gambling opportunities than many states. Along with these opportunities come problems with gambling addiction. According to the state Department of Human Services, one in ten teens is at risk for developing a gambling problem. And one in every 25 is a problem gambler. The campaign encourages parents to talk with their children about gambling and, if their youngsters do gamble, the importance of keeping it a game. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press.
