Tribe gets second try at coastal property

8/22/03 - By Winston Ross , The Register-Guard

FLORENCE - A Coos Bay tribe is once again the front-runner for a sought-after piece of property at Coos Head, after suing the federal government last month.  The U.S. General Services Administration, which decides the fate of abandoned federal property, has agreed to review the tribe's late application for the 43 acres of waterfront land, government officials confirmed this week.

The tribe is eyeing a destination resort, hotel and interpretive center for the site, though the pressing need is for more office space, said Francis Somday, tribal administrator.

The county wanted to turn the land over to resort developers to stimulate the economy. The Oregon Coastal Environments Awareness Network said it would use the site as a hub for educational exhibits.
